Sat Feb 22 19:34:00 UTC 2025: ## BJP’s Rekha Gupta Sworn in as Delhi’s New Chief Minister

**NEW DELHI, February 20, 2025** – Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA, has been sworn in as Delhi’s new Chief Minister, marking a significant victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after 26 years in opposition. The 50-year-old leader, whose appointment surprised many, is described as a long-time party loyalist who rose through the ranks, starting with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1992.

Ms. Gupta’s career trajectory includes serving as Delhi University Student Union president and holding various positions within the BJP, including National Secretary of the Yuva Morcha and National General Secretary of the Mahila Morcha. Despite losing previous Assembly elections in 2015 and 2020, she secured a landslide victory in Shalimar Bagh constituency in the recent 2025 elections.

Party insiders credit Ms. Gupta’s success to her strong grassroots connections and her dedication to party work. Her image as a hardworking and unassuming leader, coupled with her Vaishya background (representing a significant Delhi demographic), contributed to the BJP’s decision to appoint her. However, her past actions, including an incident involving the destruction of a microphone during a clash in the MCD house and previous critical statements about JNU students, have drawn some criticism.

Despite facing challenges, including navigating a cabinet of senior party members, Ms. Gupta has pledged to prioritize the BJP’s promises for a “Viksit Delhi for a Viksit Bharat” (Developed Delhi for a Developed India). Her administration now faces the task of addressing Delhi’s complex issues.
