Sun Feb 23 14:00:36 UTC 2025: ## Vellore Road Upgrade to Boost Tourism

**Vellore, Tamil Nadu – February 24, 2025** – A ₹6-crore road improvement project is underway to upgrade the Pennathur-Thellai Main Road leading to the Amirthi Zoo and Sri Lakshmi Narayani Golden Temple near Vellore. The 14.4 km stretch, part of the Cuddalore-Chittoor Highway, is being widened from a single lane to a 7-meter wide two-lane road, improving access to these popular tourist destinations.

Funded under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme (2024-25), the project includes the installation of paver blocks, reflectors, blinkers, and LED streetlights, as well as the construction of tiled footpaths. Old storm water drains are being replaced to prevent flooding in nearby residential areas and redirect excess rainwater into lakes connected to the Palar River. Eight new culverts are also being built to manage monsoon rains. The work, which requires the relocation of around 20 Tangedco poles and some trees, is expected to be completed within two months.

The upgrade is anticipated to benefit not only tourists visiting the Amirthi Zoo, known for its diverse wildlife including spotted deer, birds, and reptiles, but also tribal communities in the Jawadhu Hills, providing easier access to towns like Vellore, Arcot, Katpadi, and Ambur. The project has received prior approval from the Forest Department to ensure environmental protection. Officials stated that the improved road will enhance safety for motorists and contribute to increased tourism in the area.
