Sun Feb 23 09:50:00 UTC 2025: ## India Suffers Record-Breaking Toss Loss, Shami’s Unlucky Over in Champions Trophy Opener
**MUMBAI, INDIA** – India’s opening match against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy was marked by some unusual records. India lost the toss for a twelfth consecutive One Day International (ODI) match, surpassing the previous record of eleven consecutive losses held by the Netherlands (March 2011-August 2013). Pakistan, winning the toss, elected to bat first.
Adding to India’s woes, star pacer Mohammed Shami bowled what is considered one of the worst overs in ODI history. He delivered five wide balls in his first over, conceding six runs. This places him third on the list of bowlers who have bowled the most balls in a single over in ODI history, behind only Hasibul Hossain (Bangladesh) and Tinashe Panyangara (Zimbabwe), who each bowled 13 balls in a single over. Zaheer Khan and Irfan Pathan previously held the record for India with ten balls in an over.
Further concerns arose regarding Shami’s fitness after he appeared to suffer a right leg injury during his fifth over. He left the field briefly, prompting fears among fans about the severity of the injury, however, he returned to bowling in the 12th over.
