Sun Feb 23 04:56:43 UTC 2025: ## Bihar to Combat Domestic Violence with 140 New Protection Officers

**Patna, Bihar – February 23, 2025** – The Bihar government announced the creation of 140 new full-time protection officer (PO) positions to bolster support for victims of domestic violence. The initiative, driven by a rise in reported cases, will establish a dedicated cadre with officers at the sub-divisional, district, and state levels. 101 POs will serve at the sub-division level, 38 at the district level, and one at the state level.

This move aligns with the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, granting POs responsibilities including assisting magistrates, arranging medical examinations for victims, and ensuring compliance with monetary relief orders.

The announcement comes alongside plans to open 11 additional “one-stop centers” (OSCs) across the state, bringing the total to 50. These centers provide comprehensive support to women affected by violence.

The increased focus on domestic violence follows a surge in registered cases in 2022-23, with domestic violence accounting for the majority (5,615) of the 8,002 total cases registered against women that year. While the government attributes the increase to improved awareness and support services, it underscores the urgent need for enhanced protection measures. The government highlights existing legislation, such as the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, as further steps in this direction.
