**Munger, Bihar, India** – Donald Sams, a 91-year-old retired Australian officer and ardent Indiaophile, was laid to rest in a Christian cemetery in Churamba, Munger, Bihar, fulfilling his final wish. Sams, who was on his 12th trip to India, passed away aboard a Ganges River cruise en route from Sultan Ganj to Patna.
He was taken to the National Hospital in Munger where he was pronounced dead. Following approval from the Australian Embassy and his wife, Alice Sams, the decision was made to bury him in Munger. A priest conducted the funeral service according to Christian rites, and no autopsy was performed as per the wishes of his family.
Munger District Magistrate Avnish Kumar Singh confirmed that the funeral arrangements were made under the supervision of the Australian Embassy. The cruise ship carrying Sams’ remains remained anchored at Babua Ghat from Friday night until Saturday afternoon.
Sams’ love for India stemmed from his father’s work in Assam during British rule. He frequently visited Assam during his numerous trips to India, and this journey marked his twelfth. His deep connection to the country led him to request in his will to be buried in India. His final resting place now stands as a testament to his enduring affection for the nation.
