**Trujillo, Peru** – At least three people died and 74 were injured when the roof of a food court at a major shopping mall in Trujillo, Peru collapsed on Thursday evening. The incident occurred at the Real Plaza shopping complex, the country’s third largest city, approximately 500 kilometers north of Lima.
Authorities reported that the deceased include two men and one woman. Among the 74 injured, 10 are children, and 11 are in serious condition. Dozens of families were in the food court at the time of the collapse, which occurred around 8:41 p.m. local time, though it wasn’t reported for approximately 30 minutes.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with over 100 firefighters and police officers searching through the debris. Interior Minister Juan Jose Santivanez estimated the collapsed area to be 700-800 square meters. He stated that hydraulic cranes are needed to lift heavy portions of the remaining roof structure to continue searching for potential survivors, including at least one child believed to be trapped. The search is hampered by the weight and instability of the collapsed structure.
