**NEW DELHI, INDIA** – A fourth group of Indian nationals, deported from the United States for illegal immigration, arrived in Delhi today. The 12 individuals were flown back via Panama, with four returning to Amritsar, Punjab. This follows previous deportations, including a large-scale operation on February 5th which saw 104 Indians returned to Amritsar via a US military plane.
The latest deportations highlight a larger ongoing issue. Approximately 300 immigrants, primarily deported under the Trump administration’s policies, are currently being held in a Panamanian hotel while awaiting repatriation to their home countries. With 40% refusing voluntary return, UN agencies are working to find alternative destinations for them. Concerns have been raised regarding their prolonged detention in Panama, which serves as a transit hub for US-funded deportations.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar previously addressed the situation, stating that India has been in contact with the US to ensure fair treatment of deportees. He noted that the US has been deporting illegal immigrants for years. Former President Trump had justified mass deportations, framing them as a crackdown on fraud and those he considered detrimental to the US.
According to the Pew Research Center, unauthorized immigrants comprised 3.3% of the US population and 23% of the foreign-born population in 2022. Panama’s role as a transit point for deportees began after President Jose Raul Mulino agreed to facilitate the process.
