**Kathmandu, Nepal –** At least 24 people were injured in clashes between security forces and protesters opposing a cable car project near the Pathibhara Devi temple in Taplejung district, eastern Nepal. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, February 22nd, left 12 security personnel among the injured. Fifteen protesters were arrested following the violence.
The clashes stemmed from ongoing protests by the “No Cable Car” group, who argue the project threatens the region’s historical identity. A similar clash occurred on Thursday, February 20th, at the construction site.
In response to the escalating situation, authorities imposed a prohibitory order on Sunday, February 23rd, in Phungling Bazaar and the Pathibhara area. The order restricts gatherings of more than five people and bans assemblies, processions, and demonstrations.
Opposition lawmakers have also voiced concerns in the House of Representatives, urging the government to halt the project due to strong local opposition. The situation remains tense as the conflict over the cable car continues.
