**Madurai, February 24, 2025** – A tragic accident claimed the lives of fourteen goats and two kids in S. Kodikulam, near Madurai, on Friday night. The animals perished in a fire that engulfed their pen.
According to police, the goats belonged to 70-year-old widow N. Natchammal, who grazed them near the S. Kodikulam irrigation tank. She kept the animals in a pen overnight, lighting a nearby lamp for illumination before retiring to a nearby building.
The fire is believed to have started when the goats accidentally knocked over the lamp. Ms. Natchammal discovered the devastation on Saturday morning. While some goats escaped, the majority perished in the blaze.
The K. Pudur police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
