Fri Feb 21 21:23:33 UTC 2025: ## Eastern Congo Fighting Intensifies, Raising Fears of Regional War

**KINSHASA, DRC** – Fighting is escalating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict appear to be failing, sparking growing anxiety in the capital Kinshasa. Rwandan-backed M23 rebels are making significant advances, expanding their control across North and South Kivu provinces and pushing towards the strategic city of Uvira.

Experts warn of a potential regional conflagration, citing the involvement of several neighboring countries, including Uganda, Burundi, and South Africa, in the complex conflict. The rapid M23 advance raises serious questions about the rebels’ ultimate ambitions and the potential for the fighting to spread far beyond the eastern DRC, possibly even threatening Kinshasa itself.

“The situation is extremely volatile,” commented Kambale Musavuli, a researcher at the Center for Research on the Congo. Angela Muvumba Sellström, a senior researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute, echoed these concerns, highlighting the escalating risk of a wider regional war. Abdullahi Halakhe, a peace and policy analyst at Refugees International, added that the humanitarian consequences are already dire and could worsen dramatically if the conflict expands.

The international community is increasingly concerned about the deepening crisis and the potential for mass displacement and further instability in the already fragile region. The question remains whether the M23 rebels can sustain their momentum and whether the involvement of regional actors will escalate the violence into a full-blown regional conflict.
