Fri Feb 21 18:21:56 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Traffic SI Sentenced to Three Years for 2009 Bribery
**Chennai, February 21, 2025** – A Chennai traffic sub-inspector, Thangaraj, has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹10,000 for accepting a ₹2,000 bribe from a two-wheeler rider in 2009. The judgment, delivered 16 years after the incident, follows a complaint filed with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC).
Thangaraj, then an SI in Kancheepuram district, stopped Sourirajan for speeding. He seized Sourirajan’s documents and demanded a bribe to avoid registering a case. Sourirajan subsequently reported the incident to the DVAC, leading to a sting operation. Thangaraj was caught red-handed accepting the bribe on November 26, 2009.
The case was heard before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Cum Special Judge, Kancheepuram, who delivered the verdict on Friday. The lengthy delay between the incident and the sentencing highlights the challenges in prosecuting corruption cases in India.
