Fri Feb 21 18:12:01 UTC 2025: ## South Africa Cruise to Victory in Champions Trophy Opener

**Lahore, Pakistan:** South Africa launched their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a resounding 107-run victory over Afghanistan in their Group B encounter. Ryan Rickelton’s maiden ODI century (103 off 106 balls) spearheaded the Proteas’ dominant performance, guiding them to a challenging 315/6.

Rickelton’s innings, studded with seven fours and a six, formed the backbone of a strong South African batting display. Captain Temba Bavuma contributed a solid 58, while Rassie van der Dussen added 52. Aiden Markram also provided a late flourish with a quickfire fifty. Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan provided a highlight, running out Rickelton with a spectacular run-out.

In response, Afghanistan’s chase faltered despite a gritty 90 from Rahmat Shah (9 boundaries and a six). The South African bowling attack proved too strong, with Kagiso Rabada taking three wickets, and Lungi Ngidi and Wiaan Mulder claiming two each. Excellent fielding, including a direct hit run-out by Marco Jansen and a stunning catch by Bavuma, further stifled Afghanistan’s efforts. The Afghans were ultimately bowled out for 208.

The victory marks a strong start for South Africa in the tournament, while Afghanistan, playing their first ever Champions Trophy match, will look to learn from the experience. The tournament continues with rivals Australia and England set to face off in their opening matches.
