**Thiruvananthapuram, February 22, 2025** – A former High Court judge has advocated for making Malayalam the official language of lower courts and legal studies in Kerala. M.R. Hariharan Nair, delivering a keynote address at International Mother Language Day celebrations on Friday, stated that existing legislation, including sections of the Code of Civil Procedure, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and provisions within the Constitution, support this change. He cited the successful implementation of Malayalam in his previous role as ombudsman, emphasizing that this linguistic shift is feasible and beneficial. The celebrations, organized by the Malayala Aikya Vedi and Mizhavu Malayalam Club at the Government Law College, also highlighted the cultural significance of preserving mother tongues. Poet V. Madhusoodanan Nair inaugurated the event, stressing the importance of mother language to a people’s identity.
