Sat Feb 22 10:34:10 UTC 2025: ## Billionaire’s Daughter Alleges Human Rights Violations After False Imprisonment in Uganda

**Mumbai, India – February 22, 2025** – Vasundhara Oswal, daughter of Indian-origin billionaire Pankaj Oswal, has accused Ugandan authorities of gross human rights violations following her wrongful imprisonment on charges of kidnapping and murder. Oswal, 26, spent over three weeks in Ugandan jails after being falsely accused of the kidnapping and murder of her father’s former employee, Mukesh Menaria. Menaria was later found alive in Tanzania.

Oswal detailed her ordeal in an interview with PTI on Friday, alleging inhumane treatment including denial of food, water, and basic hygiene facilities. She stated that her family was forced to bribe police officers to provide her with essential necessities. She further alleged that police searched her property without a warrant, coerced her into giving a statement without legal representation, and illegally detained her even after a court ordered her release. Oswal claims she was held in cells with petty criminals and later with convicted murderers and human traffickers.

The charges against Oswal, initially kidnapping and attempted murder, were eventually reduced to misdemeanour confinement after her family paid money, a claim she attributes to police extortion. The case was ultimately dismissed on December 19, 2024. Despite the dismissal, Oswal is exploring legal options to seek redress for her treatment. She criticized the Ugandan police for their lack of proper investigation and called on the Ugandan government to address its mistakes and compensate her for the ordeal. Oswal stated that she has been investing in Uganda for three years and feels that the government has failed to treat her fairly.
