**DHAKA, BANGLADESH** – A senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mohammad Babul Mia, was brutally murdered on Friday afternoon in Dhaka, police confirmed. Mia, the former vice-president of the party’s Kulla union unit, was attacked and killed while harvesting mustard with his wife near Akshirnagar Housing in Dhamrai upazila.
According to Mia’s wife, Yasmin Begum, the attack stemmed from a long-standing land dispute involving the Akshirnagar Housing real estate project. Although her husband was not directly involved, she alleges that three local men – Afsar, Arshad, and Monir – had been threatening the couple for days prior to the attack. Begum stated that the assailants beat Mia with sticks and steel pipes, inflicting severe injuries, including the gouging out of his eyes. They reportedly prevented her and other bystanders from intervening or taking Mia to the hospital until he was unconscious.
Mia was subsequently taken to Savar Enam Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Dhamrai Police Station officer-in-charge Monirul Islam stated that initial investigations suggest the murder was linked to the pre-existing dispute. Police are currently working to apprehend those responsible and have launched an investigation into the incident. Begum intends to file a formal complaint.
