**New Delhi, February 22, 2025** – Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has launched a scathing attack on alleged foreign interference in Indian elections, citing former US President Donald Trump’s claims of a $21 million kickback scheme involving USAID funds in 2012 aimed at manipulating voter turnout. Dhankhar described the allegations as a “political Covid” infecting Indian democracy and called for a full investigation into the matter.
Speaking at a Rajya Sabha Internship Programme, Dhankhar expressed shock at Trump’s revelations, stating that any attempt to manipulate India’s democratic process is an act of undermining national sovereignty. He vehemently asserted that the right to elect representatives rests solely with the Indian people and that any interference constitutes a grave offense.
Dhankhar urged a thorough investigation into the alleged scheme, demanding that those involved be exposed and held accountable for their actions. He characterized the situation as a “sinister activity” aimed at destroying Indian democracy.
The Vice President’s comments also extended to criticism of what he termed as a “structured taint” affecting Indian institutions, linking it to the phenomenon of “wokeism.” He voiced strong disapproval of the perceived lack of respect shown towards constitutional functionaries, specifically citing comments made by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi about President Droupadi Murmu following her address to Parliament. Dhankhar described Gandhi’s remarks as shameful and disrespectful. The Rashtrapati Bhavan previously condemned Gandhi’s comments as being in poor taste.
Dhankhar’s statement comes amidst ongoing tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress party. His strong condemnation of alleged foreign interference and perceived disrespect towards constitutional offices has ignited a significant political debate in India.
