HYDERABAD, February 21, 2025 – A non-governmental organization, the Federation of Farmers Associations in Telangana, has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition with the Telangana High Court. The petition seeks to compel the Leader of Opposition, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, to attend Assembly sessions or relinquish his post.
The petitioner, NGO president D. Vijaypal Reddy, argues that the Leader of Opposition’s absence hinders the representation of the people’s voices. The petition requests the court to direct the Assembly Speaker and Legislature Secretary to initiate procedures ensuring Mr. Rao’s attendance. Alternatively, if Mr. Rao faces personal difficulties, the petition suggests that the BRS working president, K.T. Rama Rao, appoint a replacement.
The petitioner emphasizes that the legislative process is not a private matter and calls upon the High Court to utilize its powers to ensure the proper functioning of the democratic system concerning the Leader of Opposition’s role. The petition also seeks a review of the Leader of Opposition’s framework in the public interest. The High Court is yet to hear the case.
