Fri Feb 21 07:36:53 UTC 2025: ## Assam Congress MP Attacked by Mob, Security to be Beefed Up

**Guwahati, Assam –** Congress MP Rakibul Hussain was attacked by a mob wielding cricket bats in Assam’s Nagaon district on Thursday, February 20, 2025. While the MP escaped unharmed, two of his personal security officers (PSOs) sustained minor injuries. The attackers, whose faces were covered, shouted slogans against Hussain. The incident occurred as the MP was traveling to a party meeting in Gunomari village.

The PSOs responded by firing their weapons, but were also attacked. Additional police forces arrived, dispersing the crowd. Hussain received first aid at a hospital. Police have launched an investigation into the attack.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Hussain’s security detail will be strengthened, particularly in the Samaguri and Rupohihat areas. He stated in the assembly that the crowd attempted to prevent Hussain from reaching the meeting, prompting the PSOs to fire. Despite the attack, Hussain proceeded to the meeting, which was held in the presence of the district Superintendent of Police.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President, Bhupen Borah, strongly condemned the attack, accusing the Chief Minister (who also holds the home portfolio) of failing to maintain law and order. Borah alleged a pattern of attacks on Congress leaders and workers without subsequent action against the perpetrators. He demanded the immediate arrest of those involved and increased security for Hussain.

Hussain, who won the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat last year by a record margin, had previously represented the Samaguri assembly constituency for five terms. His son recently lost the by-election in that constituency to a BJP candidate. The area witnessed several incidents of violence in the lead-up to the by-election. Police maintain the situation is under control and investigations are underway.
