RAMGARH, JHARKHAND (February 21, 2025) – A 65-year-old woman was rescued by police after being allegedly locked in her home for three days by her son, who had traveled to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
Akhilesh Kumar, a Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) employee, left his ailing mother, Sanju Devi, alone in their Ramgarh home from Monday, February 17th to Wednesday, February 19th. Devi survived on flattened rice during this period. Neighbors alerted her daughter, Chandni Devi, after hearing the woman cry out in hunger.
Police, acting on Chandni Devi’s report, rescued Sanju Devi on Wednesday, breaking the lock on the house. She received immediate medical attention and food from neighbors before being admitted to a CCL hospital.
While Akhilesh Kumar claims he made arrangements for his mother’s care before leaving for the Kumbh Mela, police are investigating the incident. The incident highlights concerns about the welfare of the elderly, particularly during large religious gatherings.
