Fri Feb 21 03:12:25 UTC 2025: ## Apple’s Budget iPhone 16e Faces Slow Start in India

**NEW DELHI** – Apple’s new budget iPhone 16e, launched Wednesday at ₹59,900 (approximately $720 USD), is not expected to be a major sales success in India immediately, analysts predict. The phone, a refresh of the iPhone SE, is priced only slightly lower than discounted flagship models like the iPhone 15 (₹62,000) and iPhone 16 (₹73,000 after discounts). Analysts believe consumers will continue to opt for the more feature-rich flagship options despite the minimal price difference.

While Apple highlights the iPhone 16e’s assembly in India for both domestic and export markets, analysts suggest the phone’s higher-than-anticipated pricing is a key factor hindering initial sales. They predict stronger traction only after a price drop below ₹50,000 during the upcoming festive season, potentially attracting first-time iPhone buyers.

“We could see a moderate response in the first half,” says Faisal Kawoosa, chief analyst at Techarc. “But a price drop below ₹50,000 during the festive season will make it a strong competitor.” He also notes that the 16e could lower the barrier to entry into the Apple ecosystem and encourage users to buy newer models instead of older, budget-friendly options.

Market research firm Canalys believes the iPhone 16e will better serve Apple’s expansion into price-sensitive markets like Southeast Asia and Latin America. Despite this, Apple’s strong performance in India continues, with the company achieving an 11% market share by volume and 23% by value in the October-December 2024 quarter. The company entered the top five smartphone brands in India for the first time during this period.
