**New Delhi –** Delhi’s newly installed BJP government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has fulfilled a key election promise by announcing the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in the national capital. The decision, announced after the first cabinet meeting, includes a Rs 5 lakh top-up from the state government.
This move marks a significant shift from the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, which had resisted implementing the central scheme, citing superior state-level programs and outdated census data used in Ayushman Bharat. The BJP had made the scheme’s implementation a central point of its election campaign.
In a further move likely to escalate political tensions, the BJP government also declared that 14 Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports, whose tabling had been delayed by the previous AAP administration, will be presented in the Delhi Assembly’s first session. These reports include one on the controversial scrapped liquor policy, which led to the arrest of several AAP leaders. The delay in tabling these reports had been the subject of litigation in the Delhi High Court.
The decision to implement Ayushman Bharat follows months of political wrangling and a petition filed by BJP MPs in the Delhi High Court demanding its implementation in Delhi. The AAP had argued that the scheme was inferior to existing Delhi government programs.
Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Atishi, from the AAP, challenged the BJP to fulfill another election promise of providing Rs 2,500 monthly to eligible women. CM Gupta responded by deflecting the challenge, stating that the BJP’s agenda would be its own. Atishi countered, accusing the BJP of breaking its promises on its first day in power.
The BJP’s victory in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, securing 48 seats to the AAP’s 22, has brought an end to the AAP’s 26-year reign in the national capital.
