**Guwahati, Assam –** Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi in the state assembly Thursday, accusing him and his late father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, of corruption and raising serious allegations about Gaurav Gogoi’s alleged links to Pakistan.
Sarma’s accusations stem from a recently tabled government report investigating irregularities in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) recruitment process between 2013 and 2014. The report implicated Tarun Gogoi in the appointment of Rakesh Kumar Paul, the prime accused, first as a member and later as chairman of the APSC, without following proper procedures. The report also alleges that Paul, who the report claims turned the APSC into a “shop selling jobs,” gifted expensive gold jewellery to Gaurav Gogoi as a wedding present, which Sarma claims was not declared to the Income Tax Department.
“I want Gaurav Gogoi, being the son of Tarun Gogoi, to defend his father against these allegations,” Sarma stated. He highlighted the absence of a statement from Gogoi despite the report’s release three days prior.
Sarma further accused Gogoi of failing to declare the wedding gift in his 2014 election affidavit. He emphasized the requirement to report such gifts to the Income Tax Department and pointed out the significant gift tax implications.
Separately, Sarma renewed his accusations regarding Gaurav Gogoi’s alleged links to Pakistan, referencing his wife’s past employment with the Climate and Knowledge Development Network in Islamabad under Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, a former advisor to the Pakistani Planning Commission. Sarma stated that an FIR has been filed against Sheikh, and that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has already uncovered evidence of Sheikh’s multiple trips to India between 2010 and 2018. He suggested that the investigation will reveal further incriminating information.
Gogoi has not yet publicly responded to the Chief Minister’s allegations. The accusations have ignited a major political controversy in Assam, with the BJP and Congress locked in a bitter exchange.
