**Bengaluru, India –** Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar ignited a firestorm of criticism on Wednesday after claiming that even divine intervention couldn’t solve Bengaluru’s crippling traffic and infrastructure woes overnight. His statement, made during the inauguration of a road construction workshop, drew immediate backlash on social media and from prominent figures.
Shivakumar argued that addressing Bengaluru’s problems requires meticulous planning and efficient execution, a process that cannot be completed rapidly. This comment, however, was met with widespread condemnation, with many pointing to the state government’s perceived slow progress on infrastructure projects and the city’s persistent traffic congestion.
Economist Mohandas Pai, chairman of Aarin Capital, directly challenged Shivakumar’s statement, highlighting the government’s lack of progress in the two years since Shivakumar took office. In a tweet, Pai criticized the government’s handling of major projects, pointing to incomplete infrastructure, dilapidated footpaths, and insufficient public transport. He urged immediate action, including the purchase of 5,000 electric buses and accelerated metro expansion.
The opposition BJP also seized on Shivakumar’s remarks, accusing the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government of gross incompetence. BJP leader Mohan Krishna criticized the government’s performance, stating that if even divine intervention couldn’t solve the problems, the current administration is clearly failing.
Shivakumar later attempted to clarify his statement, announcing the release of a handbook detailing plans to address Bengaluru’s infrastructural challenges, including road and bus stand redesigns aimed at easing traffic congestion. However, this clarification did little to quell the growing public anger and criticism directed at the state government’s handling of Bengaluru’s escalating infrastructure crisis.
