**New York, NY** – Acclaimed actress Cynthia Erivo will host the 2025 Tony Awards, the American Theater Wing and the Broadway League announced Wednesday. The ceremony, honoring Broadway’s best, will take place June 8th at Radio City Music Hall, with much of the event airing on CBS.
Erivo, 38, is a British actress whose star has risen rapidly. She won a Tony Award in 2016 for her leading role in “The Color Purple” and has since garnered two Oscar nominations, one for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in the 2019 film “Harriet,” and another for her performance as Elphaba in the film adaptation of “Wicked,” which is currently in theaters. Erivo will also reprise her role in the second installment of the “Wicked” film series, set for release in November.
Beyond her film work, Erivo will star as Jesus in a one-weekend revival of “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Hollywood Bowl in August. The Tony Awards nominations for this year’s ceremony, covering Broadway shows opening between April 26, 2024, and April 27, 2025, will be announced May 1st.
