Fri Feb 21 06:50:18 UTC 2025: ## Florence Cracks Down on Overtourism with Self-Check-in Keybox Ban

**Florence, Italy** – In a bid to curb escalating overtourism, the city of Florence has implemented a unique measure: a ban on self-check-in keyboxes for holiday rentals. Starting February 25, 2025, owners of properties listed on platforms like Airbnb will be required to remove these keyboxes, facing fines up to €400 for non-compliance.

Mayor Sara Funaro announced the crackdown, stating that city officials will actively remove any remaining keyboxes after the deadline. The decision follows concerns over security risks associated with contactless check-ins, aesthetic issues, and vandalism of the boxes. Locals have reportedly been seen defacing keyboxes with red Xs.

This move comes as Florence grapples with a massive influx of tourists; over 7.8 million visitors were recorded in the first nine months of 2024. The city council has stated that the current level of tourism is unsustainable, compromising the city’s heritage and livability.

Florence’s action mirrors similar efforts across Italy to combat overtourism. Venice recently increased day-tripper admission fees for last-minute bookings, while other cities are exploring measures to limit visitor numbers and increase prices. The overall aim is to protect local communities and infrastructure from the strain of excessive tourism.
