MUMBAI, INDIA (February 21, 2025) – Maharashtra’s Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, Dhananjay Munde, has announced he is suffering from Bell’s palsy. The condition, which causes temporary facial paralysis, has significantly impacted his ability to speak, preventing him from attending cabinet meetings and public engagements.
Mr. Munde revealed his diagnosis in a social media post, stating that he is unable to speak for more than a couple of minutes at a time. This announcement comes approximately two weeks after he underwent eye surgery and was advised to avoid bright lights, dust, and sun exposure.
Bell’s palsy, also known as Idiopathic Peripheral Facial Palsy, affects facial nerve function, often causing weakness or paralysis on one side of the face. While the exact cause is frequently unknown, viral infections are sometimes implicated. The condition is generally temporary, with most individuals recovering fully. However, risk factors such as diabetes, pregnancy, preeclampsia, obesity, hypertension, and certain diseases like Lyme disease and sarcoidosis can increase susceptibility.
Symptoms, which can appear suddenly, include facial drooping, difficulty with facial expressions, drooling, eyelid closure problems, facial pain, and impaired taste and eating/drinking. While usually affecting one side of the face, rare cases involve both sides. Because symptoms can mimic other conditions like strokes and Guillain-Barre syndrome, prompt medical evaluation is crucial for accurate diagnosis.
Most Bell’s palsy cases improve within weeks, often requiring no treatment. However, doctors may prescribe medication such as eye drops, steroids, or antiviral drugs to alleviate symptoms. Complete recovery is common, although some cases may have lingering effects.
