**RALEIGH, NC** – Wake County Public Schools (WCPSS) is significantly boosting school security with the rollout of a new panic button app, RAVE. The app, designed to improve response times to both non-emergency incidents and emergencies like active shooter situations, is being phased in across over 120 schools this week.
The two-phased rollout aims to avoid overwhelming the system initially, with full district-wide implementation expected by this spring. While participation isn’t mandatory, WCPSS reports nearly 86,000 employees, including teachers, have already updated their contact information within the app, demonstrating significant uptake.
The RAVE app allows teachers and staff to quickly alert administrators and, if necessary, law enforcement directly. This new safety measure is welcomed by parents and staff alike, with one parent, Debbie Drew, commenting that “anything will help” given the current climate and concerns for student safety. The district’s security office believes the app will be a valuable tool in ensuring a safer learning environment for all students and staff.
