Wed Feb 19 09:24:45 UTC 2025: ## Swedish Supreme Court Rejects Climate Change Lawsuit Against Government

**Stockholm, Sweden** – Sweden’s Supreme Court dismissed a class-action lawsuit filed by 300 climate activists, known as the Aurora group, against the government for insufficient action on climate change. The lawsuit, initially filed in 2022, argued that the government’s actions violate human rights outlined in the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Supreme Court ruled that it lacks the authority to dictate specific climate policies to the parliament or government. While acknowledging the European Court of Justice’s recognition of certain groups’ rights to sue over climate change, the court stated that any future lawsuits must focus solely on human rights violations, not on mandating specific governmental actions.

The Aurora group had sought to compel Sweden to implement more stringent measures to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. This decision comes after a contrasting ruling by the European Court of Human Rights last year, which found the Swiss government liable for insufficient climate action. However, the ECHR also rejected other similar cases, highlighting the complexities of such legal challenges. The Swedish Supreme Court left the door open for differently formulated lawsuits focusing on human rights violations to proceed.
