**Vatican City, February 19, 2025** – Pope Francis, 88, is hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli hospital with double pneumonia, but is reportedly alert and in good spirits, according to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The Pope, who was initially admitted last Friday with bronchitis, has been diagnosed with a polymicrobial infection, bronchiectasis, and asthmatic bronchitis, requiring antibiotic and cortisone therapy. A CT scan revealed the pneumonia affecting both lungs.
Despite the serious diagnosis, the Vatican released a statement confirming the Pope spent a peaceful night, is breathing independently, and has been communicating with friends by phone. He has even been sitting up in a chair and working intermittently. Prime Minister Meloni, after visiting the Pope, reported he remained alert and maintained his sense of humor.
The news follows widespread online speculation, including false reports of his death. The Vatican has cancelled the Pope’s Saturday audience and Sunday mass, but the status of his weekly Angelus prayer remains unannounced. Cardinal Baldassare Reina has called upon Roman parishes to pray for the Pope’s recovery.
While the Vatican described the situation as complex, Jesuit theologian Antonio Spadaro suggested a hospital stay of two to three weeks. He emphasized the Pope’s strong vital energy and resilience. Although the possibility of resignation has been previously discussed by the Pope, Spadaro indicated no sense of alarmism. Pilgrims have gathered outside the hospital to pray, leaving candles and drawings for the pontiff. The Pope’s health has been a concern in recent years, with previous surgeries and mobility issues. This hospitalization comes during the busy Jubilee year.
