MOSCOW, ID — A judge has rejected Idaho college murders suspect Bryan Kohberger’s attempts to suppress crucial evidence gathered during search warrants, a significant setback for his defense team. The ruling, while anticipated, leaves Kohberger’s defense weakened.

Kohberger’s lawyers argued that the presence of two unidentified male DNA samples found at the crime scene – a handrail and a glove – cast doubt on his involvement. They contended that this evidence undermined probable cause for his arrest. However, Judge Steven Hippler dismissed this argument, citing the presence of Kohberger’s DNA on a knife sheath found under the body of one of the victims.

The judge also denied Kohberger’s request for a Frank’s hearing, which would have allowed his lawyers to challenge the police investigation. Kohberger, a 30-year-old criminology Ph.D. student at Washington State University, is accused of murdering four University of Idaho students on November 13, 2022.

The discovery of Kohberger’s DNA on the knife sheath proved pivotal in the judge’s decision. The judge’s ruling allows this key piece of evidence to be admissible in the upcoming trial. Kohberger’s trial is set to begin in August, and he faces the death penalty if convicted.
