**Kolkata, February 20, 2025** – The Kolkata Police have secured a swift death sentence for Rajib Ghosh, a 34-year-old man convicted of the rape and attempted murder of a seven-month-old baby. The conviction, handed down on Tuesday by the Bankshall court, came a mere 79 days after the November 30, 2024 crime.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma lauded the speed of the investigation and conviction, stating it is likely the first case where capital punishment was awarded for the rape of a surviving victim. Ghosh was arrested four days after the crime, with the help of technical evidence including gait analysis, dental pattern matching, and DNA profiling. A special investigation team worked diligently, submitting the chargesheet within 28 days.
Ghosh was charged under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for kidnapping and rape of a minor, and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Commissioner Verma noted that the infant survivor remains under treatment at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, but her condition is serious and unlikely to fully recover. The swift justice in this case highlights the Kolkata Police’s commitment to effective and expeditious investigation and prosecution of such heinous crimes.
