Wed Feb 19 12:28:04 UTC 2025: ## Ganga Water Contaminated During Maha Kumbh: High Levels of Faecal Bacteria Detected
**Prayagraj, India** – The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has revealed alarmingly high levels of faecal coliform bacteria in the Ganga River near Prayagraj, posing a serious health risk to the millions of devotees participating in the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela 2025. A report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) confirms that bacterial counts significantly exceed the safe limit of 2,500 units per 100 millilitres.
The contamination, primarily attributed to untreated sewage entering the river, has raised concerns about the potential for waterborne illnesses. Over 50 crore devotees are estimated to have already taken holy dips in the Sangam waters during the festival. The presence of faecal coliform bacteria, indicative of human and animal waste, suggests the possibility of harmful pathogens like viruses and parasites in the water. Exposure can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhoea and stomach aches.
While total coliform bacteria are not considered reliable indicators of water quality, the high levels of faecal coliform detected underscore a serious pollution problem. Experts warn that consuming contaminated water carries significant health risks. The CPCB’s findings highlight the urgent need for improved sewage treatment and water management in the region to prevent future contamination events.
