Wed Feb 19 11:31:52 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka Extends Water Release from Malaprabha Reservoir to March 1st

**Hubbali, Karnataka – February 19, 2025** – Responding to farmer demands, Karnataka Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar has ordered the continued release of water from the Malaprabha reservoir until March 1st. The decision, reached at a February 15th meeting of the Malaprabha Irrigation Consultative Committee, overrides a planned earlier cutoff.

The reservoir, currently full, will allocate 14.87 tmc ft of water for the 2024-25 Kharif season and 16 tmc ft for the Rabi season, totaling 30.842 tmc ft for irrigation. While 16 tmc ft had already been released by February 14th, requests from Naragund and Badami legislators for an extension to March 15th led to the compromise date.

To ensure drinking water security, Minister Hebbalkar has mandated the preservation of 15 tmc ft of water until the end of June. Local officials have been instructed to prioritize filling water tanks across the region. Superintending Engineer V.S. Madhukar urged water conservation, anticipating increased summer demand.
