Wed Feb 19 09:30:15 UTC 2025: ## Supreme Court to Hear Challenges to New Election Commissioner Appointment Law

**New Delhi** – The Supreme Court will hear arguments tomorrow on the constitutionality of the new law governing the appointment of India’s Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs). The 2023 law establishes a three-member selection committee comprised of the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), a cabinet minister nominated by the Prime Minister (Amit Shah), and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

This process has been challenged in the Supreme Court on the grounds that it gives the central government undue influence over the appointments. Critics argue the structure of the committee allows the executive branch an excessive role in selecting individuals responsible for overseeing elections, potentially compromising the independence of the Election Commission of India. The court will now consider these arguments and determine the legality of the new appointment mechanism.
