THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Feb 19, 2025 – A new nine-story hospital block at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) will be inaugurated Thursday. The building, constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), significantly expands the institute’s capacity to address its growing space constraints.
The 2.70 lakh sq ft facility will house several centers of clinical excellence, including nine state-of-the-art operating theaters, MRI and CT scan facilities, three Cath labs, and advanced neuro-cardiac care services. The new block will also add 170 beds, including 130 ICU beds, and notably includes 40 pay wards – a first for SCTIMST. Additional amenities such as modern wellness centers, counselling rooms, and a cafeteria are also included.
Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare J.P. Nadda and Minister of State for Science and Technology and Ministry of Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh will lead the inauguration ceremony. Other dignitaries expected include several state ministers and officials. The new facilities are expected to reduce waiting times for surgeries and other procedures. The hospital will become operational in phases.
