**Karachi, Pakistan:** New Zealand launched their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a resounding 60-run victory over Pakistan at the National Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday. A stellar batting performance, spearheaded by captain Tom Latham’s unbeaten 118 and Will Young’s 107, propelled New Zealand to a challenging 320/5 in their 50 overs.
Pakistan’s chase faltered early, losing wickets at regular intervals despite a fighting 69 from Khushdil Shah. Their innings ended at 260 all out in 47.2 overs. While Babar Azam contributed a 64-run knock, the Pakistan batting lineup failed to build significant partnerships against the disciplined New Zealand bowling attack. William O’Rourke and Mitchell Santner were the pick of the Kiwi bowlers, taking three and two wickets respectively.
New Zealand’s innings got off to a shaky start, losing early wickets. However, the partnership between Young and Latham formed the backbone of their innings, putting on a 125-run stand for the fifth wicket. Phillips also played a significant cameo, scoring a quick-fire 61. Pakistan’s bowling attack, featuring notable wickets from Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, couldn’t prevent the Kiwi run surge.
The victory marks a strong start for New Zealand in the tournament, while Pakistan will need to address their batting frailties going into the next match. The Champions Trophy, making its return after an eight-year hiatus, is being hosted by Pakistan, with India playing its matches in Dubai due to security concerns.
