Wed Feb 19 17:14:08 UTC 2025: **Former BJYM Leader Seeks Central Security After Death Threats**
Imphal, Manipur – M. Barish Sharma, former State President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), has requested central security forces for his protection after receiving death threats following a viral video criticizing Manipur’s ex-CM N. Biren Singh. While Sharma has been provided a six-man state police security detail, he expressed concerns in a letter to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, stating that the detail consists entirely of Meitei officers and citing past instances where police protection had failed to prevent violence.
Sharma claims that the threats began after he released a video alleging that Singh had used and discarded village volunteers, including himself, during conflict. The video went viral, leading to threats, including those allegedly from members of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP). He also reported a February 17th incident where a mob, including members of Meira Paibi groups, appeared at his home with intent to vandalize it.
Sharma’s letter highlights concerns about the potential inability of state police to protect him due to community affiliations, referencing previous attacks on the homes of ministers and MLAs, even those related to the Chief Minister, despite having police protection. He now seeks “neutral, well-trained” central forces to ensure his safety and that of his family.
