Tue Feb 18 19:47:25 UTC 2025: ## UP Pollution Board Summoned by NGT Over Prayagraj Water Quality
**Lucknow, [Date of Publication]** – The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has summoned Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) officials for failing to submit a report on improving water quality in Prayagraj ahead of the 2025 Mahakumbh Mela.
The NGT had previously ordered both the UPPCB and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to submit water quality reports by specific deadlines. While the CPCB submitted a report on February 3rd, highlighting significant water pollution in the Ganga and Yamuna rivers at Prayagraj, the UPPCB failed to comply.
The CPCB report revealed alarming levels of fecal coliform bacteria at all monitored locations, exceeding safe bathing standards. This was particularly concerning given the large number of bathers expected during the Mahakumbh. The report also cited non-compliance with prescribed norms for several water quality parameters at seven geosynthetic dewatering tube filtration sites. Further, many sewage treatment plants (STPs) were found operating beyond capacity, with one failing to meet regulatory standards.
Despite claims by Mahakumbh Mela management authorities that they are treating wastewater from over 1.5 lakh toilets daily, the NGT found the UPPCB’s inaction unacceptable. The Tribunal has ordered the UPPCB Member Secretary and the relevant state authority to appear virtually on February 19th to explain their failure to comply with its directives. The Tribunal granted the state counsel one day to file a response.
