Tue Feb 18 18:32:11 UTC 2025: ## Ganga River Heavily Polluted During Maha Kumbh Mela: CPCB

**Prayagraj, India** – The Ganga River in Prayagraj, India, is severely contaminated with faecal coliform bacteria, according to a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) report submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The alarming levels of pollution were detected during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, a massive religious gathering where over 500 million people have taken holy dips in the river.

The CPCB found faecal coliform levels far exceeding the safe limit of 2,500 units per 100 millilitres at various locations. This poses a significant health risk to pilgrims and local residents, increasing the likelihood of waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, vomiting, gastrointestinal infections, skin rashes, eye irritations, typhoid, and hepatitis A. Untreated sewage discharged into the river is the primary cause of the contamination. Inhalation of contaminated water droplets also presents a risk of respiratory infections, particularly for vulnerable populations.

The report highlights the urgent need for improved sewage treatment and wastewater management in the area. Long-term exposure to such high levels of faecal coliform bacteria is also linked to increased cancer risks. The NGT is expected to address the issue and potentially order remedial action. The CPCB’s findings serve as a stark reminder of the environmental challenges posed by large-scale religious gatherings and the critical need for sustainable water management practices.
