**Chennai, February 19, 2025** – Dr. Mithra G. Augustine, former Principal of Madras Christian College and former director of the Ecumenical Christian Centre, Bangalore, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 94. He is survived by his wife, Beula Vasantha, daughter Melita, and son Michael.
Dr. Augustine, a visionary leader and alumnus of Madras Christian College, completed his MSc there before earning a PhD in Entomology from Ohio State University as a Fulbright Scholar. He returned to teach at MCC in 1962 and served as Principal from 1981 to 1989. Colleagues described him as a transformative leader and passionate educator who inspired generations of students. His contributions extended beyond the classroom, encompassing roles on the governing bodies of numerous educational, theological, and medical institutions, as well as committees of the University Grants Commission. He played a crucial role in shaping academic programs, research initiatives, and community engagement.
A viewing will be held at the Bishop Heber Chapel in Madras Christian College on Thursday, February 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m.
