Wed Feb 19 09:08:18 UTC 2025: ## Tesla Eyes Maharashtra for Indian Gigafactory, Talks with Officials Underway

**Mumbai, India –** Tesla is reportedly close to establishing its first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in India, with Maharashtra emerging as the frontrunner. According to a report in The Economic Times, the company is currently evaluating potential sites in the state, engaging in discussions with state officials. The development follows a meeting between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year.

Maharashtra’s appeal stems from Tesla’s existing Pune office and the presence of numerous suppliers in the state. The government has reportedly offered land near Chakan and Chikhali, industrial hubs close to Pune. While Chakan boasts established automotive manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz and Tata Motors, Maharashtra officials stress that negotiations are ongoing and no final agreement has been reached. Tesla is meticulously considering factors like port proximity before making a decision.

Although Maharashtra is currently leading, the competition remains fierce, with other states also vying for the project. The final location will likely depend on the incentives offered. This follows previous instances where Maharashtra lost out on significant investment projects.

Tesla’s renewed interest in India is evident in recent LinkedIn job postings for 13 roles in Mumbai and Delhi, including sales, service, and business operations. This suggests a potential launch of sales showrooms before the manufacturing plant is operational. The company is also reportedly exploring partnerships and local component sourcing, engaging with executives at major Indian manufacturers like Tata Motors.

The return of Prashanth Menon, a senior Tesla executive previously involved in India market efforts, further underscores the company’s commitment. Tesla’s India journey has faced hurdles, including previous attempts to negotiate lower import duties. However, India’s recently introduced EV policy, offering duty concessions for significant investments, has likely played a role in Tesla’s renewed interest. While Musk’s postponed April visit raised some concerns, the ongoing land negotiations indicate that Tesla’s entry into the Indian market remains a strong possibility.
