Tue Feb 18 20:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Champions League Round of 16 Draw: New Format Sparks Debate

**Nyon, Switzerland** – The UEFA Champions League’s revamped format is set to reach its knockout stages, causing controversy amongst football analysts. The round of 16 draw will take place on February 21st at 6 a.m. ET / 11 a.m. GMT, but the new system for determining matchups is already generating heated discussions.

The top eight teams from the group stage—Arsenal, Aston Villa, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, Bayer Leverkusen, Internazionale, Lille, and Liverpool—have automatically qualified. They will face the winners of the eight knockout playoff round ties played between February 18th and 19th. The new format pre-determines much of the knockout bracket based on final league table positions. This means the path to the final is largely set, with limited randomness in subsequent rounds. For instance, Liverpool and Barcelona, finishing first and second, can only face one of four specific teams in the round of 16.

Unlike previous years, the draw doesn’t pit teams directly against each other. Instead, it places the top eight teams into predetermined positions within the bracket, automatically generating fixtures through to the final. The pairings are fixed: 1st vs 2nd, 3rd vs 4th, and so on, ensuring these teams cannot meet until the final.

The round of 16 draw will determine which of the two possible positions each of the top four pairs will occupy, thus deciding their opponents. For example, Liverpool and Barcelona will face either the winner of Brest vs. PSG or Monaco vs. Benfica, depending on their draw position.

The quarterfinals and semifinals are also predetermined by the round of 16 results, eliminating the need for a further draw. The first legs of the round of 16 will be played on March 4-5, with second legs on March 11-12. Quarterfinals are scheduled for April 8-9 and 15-16, while semifinals take place April 29-30 and May 6-7. The final is set for May 31st at the Allianz Arena in Munich. A separate draw after the round of 16 will determine home advantage in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

The new format also includes squad registration limitations: clubs can only make three changes to their registered 25-player squad after the group stage. This change is already impacting teams who have made multiple signings during the January transfer window. The Football Reporters podcast highlights widespread frustrations with the reduced unpredictability and element of chance within this new format.
