Wed Feb 19 08:01:52 UTC 2025: ## Assam Assembly Adjourned Three Times Amidst Heated Debates
**Guwahati, Assam – February 19, 2025** – The Assam Assembly was adjourned three times on Wednesday following heated clashes between the ruling and opposition parties. The disruptions stemmed from competing demands for discussions on several pressing issues, overriding the day’s scheduled agenda.
The Opposition submitted four adjournment motions covering a range of topics: the Umrangso coal mine tragedy (Congress), coal and other syndicates (CPI(M)), alleged torture of Indian citizens in a detention centre (AIUDF), and the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-job scam (Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi). Simultaneously, the ruling BJP-led alliance demanded a discussion on the recently released report of the one-man Justice (Retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma Commission investigating the APSC scam.
Despite the Speaker, Biswajit Daimary, rejecting all five demands, the ensuing chaos forced three adjournments – two for 10 minutes and one for 20 minutes – as both sides engaged in shouting and sloganeering from the well of the House. The AIUDF notably displayed placards demanding justice for those allegedly tortured in detention.
Following the final adjournment, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the government’s willingness to discuss all four opposition-raised issues at a later date during the ongoing month-long budget session. This announcement eventually calmed the situation, allowing the Assembly to resume its normal proceedings.
