**Kathmandu, Nepal – February 18, 2025** – The suicide of a Nepali student at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, India, has prompted a diplomatic response from the Nepalese government. Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student, died by suicide in her hostel on Sunday, triggering protests among other Nepalese students.
Following the incident, Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli announced that two embassy officials have been dispatched to Odisha to counsel the affected students and offer support, allowing them to choose between returning home or remaining in their hostel. Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba confirmed further diplomatic efforts are underway.
Reports emerged that some students were initially asked to vacate their hostel rooms, prompting a demonstration outside the Indian embassy in Kathmandu demanding a thorough investigation. The KIIT administration later issued a statement assuring the Nepalese embassy it would provide accommodation and address any academic setbacks.
The Indian embassy in Kathmandu expressed its condolences and stated that local authorities have launched an investigation. They emphasized the importance of the Nepali student community to the India-Nepal relationship and reaffirmed their commitment to the well-being of Nepali students in India.
The All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary also condemned the incident, alleging violence and intimidation against Nepali students and urging stronger diplomatic action to ensure a fair investigation and better protection for Nepali students studying in India. The situation, while initially tense, is reported to have calmed following the Nepalese government’s intervention and the KIIT’s assurances.
