Tue Feb 18 16:42:41 UTC 2025: ## Indian Immigrant Deported from US Recounts Grueling Detention Center Experience

**Hoshiarpur, Punjab –** A 21-year-old Indian immigrant, Davinder Singh, has returned to India after being deported from the United States following an illegal border crossing. Singh, one of 116 Indians repatriated on a military aircraft, detailed harrowing conditions at a US detention center where he spent 18 days.

Singh’s journey to the US involved a perilous trek through multiple countries, including Amsterdam, Suriname, Guatemala, and the Panama forest. He crossed the US border on January 27th but was immediately apprehended. He described the detention facility as a place where basic human rights were violated, citing freezing temperatures, inadequate blankets, and insufficient food. He specifically noted the lack of proper clothing, forcing detainees to wear the same clothes for 18 days, and described receiving only small portions of chips, juice, half-baked bread and rice, and some vegetables, five times a day. As a vegetarian, he was unable to eat the provided beef.

Singh further alleges that US officials displayed blatant disrespect towards Sikh immigrants, including discarding their turbans in the trash. “It was very painful watching turbans being thrown into a dustbin,” he told PTI. He stated that appeals for warmer clothing were ignored by authorities.

The ordeal has been emotionally and mentally taxing for Singh, whose family reportedly spent 40 lakh rupees (approximately $48,000 USD) to facilitate his journey. He now plans to return to his father’s electronics repair shop in Tanda, Hoshiarpur. Singh’s account is one of several highlighting the difficult experiences faced by Indian immigrants in US detention centers, amidst a reported increase in deportations under previous administrations’ stricter immigration policies.
