**NEW DELHI/MUMBAI –** Tesla is poised to finally enter the Indian market, with plans to open showrooms in New Delhi and Mumbai. Sources familiar with the matter reveal the electric vehicle giant has secured locations in Aerocity, near Delhi’s international airport, and the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai. Both showrooms will be approximately 5,000 square feet.
The move follows a meeting last week between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where discussions included space, mobility, and technology. While opening dates haven’t been confirmed, the showrooms will initially focus on sales of imported electric vehicles. Service centers are not yet part of the plan.
This announcement comes alongside Tesla posting job ads for 13 mid-level roles in India, including store and customer relationship managers, further solidifying their commitment to the Indian market. Tesla’s entry has been long-awaited but delayed due to high import tariffs on EVs in India (around 100%). Despite lobbying efforts, Tesla continues to face opposition from domestic automakers concerned about the impact on their own EV plans. The recent discussions between U.S. President Biden and Prime Minister Modi touched upon these tariffs, hinting at potential future trade deal negotiations.
