**Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala –** A first-year biotechnology student at Karyavattom Government College, Bins Jose, has accused seven senior students of brutally ragging him on February 11th. The incident, which involved assault, harassment, and confinement, has sparked outrage, particularly following a similar recent incident at a Kottayam nursing college.
Jose alleges he was beaten with a bamboo pole and belt by the group, who then locked him in a room, forced him to kneel, and even gave him water that had been spat in. He further claims the seniors threatened him with dire consequences if he reported the incident and attempted to force him to blame his friend for the assault.
The seven accused students have been suspended pending an investigation by the college’s anti-ragging cell. Jose filed a complaint with both the college authorities and the Kazhakoottam Police on the day of the attack. Police initially registered a case based on charges including rioting, wrongful confinement, and restriction. Following a report from the college principal confirming the ragging, ragging-related charges were added to the case. A report will be submitted to the court soon.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from the Congress-led UDF opposition, who allege that members of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the ruling CPI(M), were responsible. UDF convenor M M Hassan accused the police of initial reluctance to file ragging charges and further criticized the SFI’s alleged involvement in drug activity on college campuses. He called for a ban on the SFI.
