Mon Feb 17 18:47:32 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Railway Station Restricts Platform Ticket Sales After Deadly Stampede

**NEW DELHI** – The Northern Railway has temporarily restricted the sale of platform tickets at New Delhi railway station from 4 PM to 11 PM for the next week following a deadly stampede on Saturday night that claimed 18 lives and left many injured. The measure, announced by Chief Public Relations Officer Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, aims to manage crowd control and prevent further incidents.

Saturday’s stampede prompted a significant response, with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Delhi Police deployed at the station on Monday to assist with crowd management. Senior CRPF officers are conducting inspections.

Indian Railways has announced compensation for victims’ families: ₹10 lakh (approximately $120,000 USD) for the families of those killed, ₹2.5 lakh (approximately $30,000 USD) for those seriously injured, and ₹1 lakh (approximately $12,000 USD) for those with minor injuries.

This is not the first time Indian Railways has implemented such restrictions. Similar measures were recently taken at 14 major stations across Maharashtra and Karnataka to manage year-end crowds. The temporary restrictions on platform ticket sales are a recurring strategy employed by railway authorities to mitigate overcrowding at peak times.
