Tue Feb 18 00:03:00 UTC 2025: ## Mexico to Sue Google Over “Gulf of America” Name Change
**Mexico City, February 18, 2025** – Mexico is poised to sue Google unless the tech giant reverses its decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico “Gulf of America” on its US-based Google Maps service. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the impending legal action following a response from Google’s vice president of government affairs, Cris Turner, who confirmed that the company would not alter its policy, a policy implemented following a declaration by former US President Donald Trump.
While Google claims its policy of using “Gulf of America” in the US is impartial and consistent with its global mapping practices, citing multiple authoritative sources, Mexico argues this violates its sovereignty. Mexico controls 49% of the Gulf, compared to the US’s 46% and Cuba’s 5%. The name “Gulf of Mexico,” dating back to 1607 and recognized by the UN, is considered the accurate and historically established designation.
The dispute comes amid heightened tensions between Mexico and the US, with threats of tariffs and mass deportations hanging over the relationship. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Mexico and the US will hold high-level meetings this week to discuss trade and security.
The renaming of the Gulf has also sparked a debate within the US, with the White House barring Associated Press reporters from certain events due to the AP’s continued use of “Gulf of Mexico.” Other journalistic organizations have raised concerns about press freedom violations. Mexico’s legal action against Google is seen as the latest escalation in a complex geopolitical standoff.
