**BHUBANESWAR, INDIA/KATHMANDU, NEPAL** – The death of a Nepali student at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, has sparked outrage and protests. Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year BTech student, was found dead in her hostel room on February 16th, allegedly by suicide following a suspected strained relationship with a male classmate.
Following the incident, over 500 Nepali students at KIIT staged protests, demanding the arrest of the male student involved. The protests led to KIIT briefly ordering all Nepali students to leave the campus, a decision that was later rescinded after intervention from Nepali officials and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
The Indian Embassy expressed its condolences to Lamsal’s family and confirmed that local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. KIIT has assured that the academic progress of Nepali students will not be affected and has urged them to return to campus. The Embassy emphasized the importance of Nepali students to the India-Nepal relationship and reiterated its commitment to their well-being. Nepali government officials have also been involved in addressing the situation, with the Nepali Foreign Minister speaking with the Indian Ambassador and sending officials to counsel students. The incident has prompted condemnation from Nepal’s opposition student union, highlighting concerns about government response.
